The curious case of Nokia Normandy

Nokia_NormandyOut of all the news coming out of CES, what i am so excited about is the news that actually didn’t come out of CES. This new leak about Nokia’s android powered Normandy smartphone presented to you by none other than famous twitter news leaking parrot named “evleaks”. As you can see in the picture above, It shows the user interface of the phone, which is actually android OS tailored by Nokia according to it’s liking. So, obviously this is not going to have Google services but this is android we are talking about here it wouldn’t take someone long to unlock all that by rooting the phone.

If you are thinking how is this possible then get this, android is an open source operating system just like Linux and any binary code that you get from github. Hell, you can make and sell an android powered toaster if you want. But the apps made by Google are not open source so Nokia obviously wouldn’t want to include them most especially the Google Play store. This is one of those phones that i actually want to try desperately for some reason. I just want to see what Nokia can do with android. It is said to be running on latest version of android i.e, android 4.4.1 Kitkat and it also said to have a 4 inch screen with 480×854 pixels resolution. It is said to running on a Snapdragon Chipset. Nothing solid right now as all of this are just leaks and all also it could just be vaporware.

Some say that the phone may never come out because because Nokia is now in the hands of Microsoft but keep in mind according to the reports Microsoft doesn’t have all the business of Nokia. Nokia is free to sell its Asha phones as they please and this phone is of Asha line, Normandy is just a code name. And Microsoft shouldn’t be bothered anyway, because if it runs on android then Nokia will also pay that $1 royalty to Microsoft on each phone they sale, just like Google does.

For some reason my gut feeling is saying that this phone is going to release and it is going to be a low-end hit just like Lumia 520. Imagine, if this phone launches around 10,000 Rupees or approx $160 and someone manages to root it which i think they definitely will, then my friends Nokia will be revived again. It’s not like it’s dead but this is not the Nokia we knew once. I liked the Nokia/Symbian combination, but this time what i want to see is, Nokia/Android combination.
