Google has officially begun widely rolling out a redesign for its Google Messages application on September 25, 2026. This update introduces entirely new swipe gestures to access timestamps and direct replies within conversation threads.
The changes alter long-standing user habits for navigating chat options. Google is distributing these updates widely under Google Messages version 20260910_03_RC02.
New Swipe Gestures and Timestamps
Under the new layout, users can swipe left anywhere in a conversation to instantly view all message timestamps and RCS encryption statuses. Previously, viewing these details required users to tap on each individual message bubble.
To reply to a specific message, users must now perform a swipe-right gesture directly on the text bubble. This new gesture replaces the old swipe-left action and requires a certain amount of precision to execute.
Visual Changes and Availability
Despite testing a single-circle design for ages, Google is rolling out the older two-circle aesthetic with this update. However, the new design is showing up on individual message Details pages and might also appear on the homepage.
When users tap a message, the system briefly peeks the timestamps out as a visual hint for the new swipe-left behavior. Users can still tap on individual bubbles to view their read receipts.
