Resident Evil Requiem Crosses $500 Million as Movie Launch Boosts Classic Remakes

Key Highlights:

  • Resident Evil Requiem has generated over $500 million (approx. ₹4,180 crore) in revenue, outpacing previous franchise launches.
  • While Zach Cregger’s film reboot opened to a record $108 million (approx. ₹900 crore), Capcom’s game discounts had a larger impact on sales than the movie.
  • The movie successfully drove player engagement for older titles, triggering a massive 48% player spike for the Resident Evil 2 remake.

Capcom’s survival horror juggernaut continues its historic run as Resident Evil Requiem officially crossed the $500 million (approximately ₹4,180 crore) revenue milestone. According to data from Alinea Analytics, the ninth mainline installment is outpacing almost every predecessor in franchise history, closing in fast on the Resident Evil 4 remake’s $600 million (approx. ₹5,015 crore) lifetime record.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 has emerged as the dominant platform for the title, securing 4 million unit sales. Despite the industry’s aggressive push toward digital-only distribution, physical media remains remarkably resilient, accounting for 30% of those PS5 sales.

Box Office Success vs. Game Discounts

The milestone coincides with the theatrical release of Zach Cregger’s cinematic reboot, which scored a franchise-best opening weekend of $108 million (approx. ₹900 crore) worldwide. However, the film’s box office triumph did not translate directly into a major sales spike for the latest game.

Instead, Capcom’s strategic promotional discounts, launched eight days prior to the movie’s debut, had a far more profound impact on overall revenue. During the film’s opening weekend, Requiem’s daily PS5 revenue actually dropped 4%—from $284,000 (approx. ₹2.37 crore) to $271,000 (approx. ₹2.26 crore)—as heavily slashed prices offset the brief surge in unit demand.

Nostalgia Spikes Player Counts

While the new film failed to move the needle significantly for the latest entry, it ignited massive player engagement across older franchise titles. The critically acclaimed Resident Evil 2 remake emerged as the biggest beneficiary, experiencing a staggering 48% jump in active players across all platforms.

Similarly, the Resident Evil 3 remake saw a respectable 25% surge in daily active players during the film’s opening week. As Capcom looks to the future with rumoured support for next-generation hardware like the Nintendo Switch 2, the franchise’s multi-platform legacy remains stronger than ever.
