Keurig Alta Ditches Plastic Pods for Eco-Friendly Compressed Coffee Tablets

Key Highlights:

  • The Keurig Alta system replaces traditional plastic K-Cups with ‘AltaRounds,’ compostable tablets of compressed coffee.
  • Each AltaRound features a thin plant-based coating and a printed recipe code that automatically tells the machine how to brew it.
  • To ease the transition, the new Alta machine is fully backward-compatible with legacy K-Cups and includes a built-in milk frother.

Keurig is embarking on its most significant environmental pivot yet. The single-serve coffee giant has unveiled the Keurig Alta, a next-generation brewing system that aims to phase out the brand’s iconic plastic K-Cups in favor of eco-friendly, compressed coffee tablets. Dubbed the “future of Keurig,” this new system addresses long-standing criticisms over plastic waste while promising a more customizable, premium brewing experience.

The core of the new system relies on “AltaRounds”—tightly packed tablets of ground coffee completely free of plastic or aluminum packaging. To maintain freshness and prevent structural breakage during transit, each round is wrapped in a thin, protective plant-based coating. Additionally, a unique recipe code is printed directly onto the surface of each tablet, which the Alta machine scans to dynamically adjust pressure, temperature, and brew style.

Smarter Brewing and Backward Compatibility

Unlike competing pod-free options like the Lavazza Tabli, which only brews espresso, the Keurig Alta is designed for versatility. The machine features a color touchscreen UI and an integrated milk frother to help users easily whip up lattes, cappuccinos, and standard drip coffee. Furthermore, Keurig is ensuring early adopters aren’t left stranded: the Alta machine is fully backward-compatible with legacy K-Cups, allowing users to transition to the plastic-free format at their own pace.

While Keurig positions the Alta as its ultimate destination, the transition will not happen overnight. K-Cups will remain widely available for the foreseeable future, ensuring that existing machine owners can still buy their favorite blends. However, by introducing a high-tech, zero-waste alternative, Keurig is taking a vital first step toward modernizing its brand for an increasingly eco-conscious consumer base.
