- OpenAI and Synopsys have entered a multi-year agreement to co-develop ‘GPT-Synopsys’ for autonomous semiconductor design.
- The specialized model will run on OpenAI’s infrastructure, enabling autonomous agents to execute complex EDA software workflows.
- The revenue-sharing partnership marks a major step forward in Synopsys’s aggressive road map toward agentic AI in silicon engineering.
In a major leap forward for the semiconductor industry, OpenAI and electronic design automation (EDA) giant Synopsys have announced a landmark multi-year partnership to develop “GPT-Synopsys.” This specialized AI model is engineered to autonomously operate EDA tools, empowering silicon engineers to design faster, more sophisticated microchips.
Under the preferred partner agreement, OpenAI will license Synopsys’s proprietary software tools to train the custom model, which will run on OpenAI’s state-of-the-art hosted infrastructure. Once finalized, the companies will co-release the platform and share the resulting revenue. While pricing and an exact launch window remain under wraps, the partnership marks a profound shift toward agentic AI in hardware engineering.
Revolutionizing the Silicon Workflow
Traditional chip design is an incredibly grueling, multi-step process. Engineers must write hardware description language (RTL) code, synthesize it into logic gates, map out physical layouts, and meticulously optimize for power, performance, and silicon area (PPA). Each of these stages requires countless iterative cycles of testing and troubleshooting.
GPT-Synopsys aims to automate these repetitive optimization loops. By delegating complex workflows to autonomous AI agents, engineering teams can focus on high-level architecture and system verification, leaving the tedious execution of software tools to the AI until the design is ready for final review.
The Road to Agentic AI
This collaboration is the latest milestone in Synopsys’s aggressive AI road map. The company previously launched DSO.ai in 2020 for reinforcement learning optimization, followed by the Microsoft Azure-powered Synopsys.ai Copilot in late 2023. More recently, Synopsys unveiled its Autopilot platform and AgentEngineer suite, which features seven autonomous agents designed to handle tasks from analog design to manufacturing compliance.
By aligning directly with OpenAI, Synopsys is securing a critical first-mover advantage, positioning itself at the absolute vanguard of the next-generation, AI-driven hardware revolution.
