- Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), bringing AI-driven upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5.
- The new tech is a streamlined neural network built with AMD, designed to maximize performance on base hardware.
- Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of YĆtei are slated to be the first titles to support QSSR.
Sony is expanding its machine-learning graphics ambitions beyond its high-end hardware, introducing AI-powered upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5. Dubbed Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), the new technology aims to give base console owners a taste of the visual fidelity previously reserved for the premium PlayStation 5 Pro.
Originally introduced as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) for the PS5 Pro, the AI upscaling feature analyzes frames on a pixel-by-pixel basis to reconstruct them at much higher resolutions. While PSSR’s heavy computational demands initially kept it exclusive to the Pro model, Sony has engineered a lighter alternative tailored for the millions of standard consoles currently in homes.
Key Details
According to Sony, QSSR relies on a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation developed alongside AMD to maximize performance on the standard PS5 hardware. Sony emphasizes that QSSR is a new performance tier rather than a direct replacement for PSSR, which remains the flagship upscaling solution for the PS5 Pro.
The rollout will begin with heavy-hitting first-party titles, with Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of YĆtei confirmed as the first games to support QSSR. Furthermore, Sony plans to make the QSSR library available to all third-party developers, potentially making AI-driven resolution boosts a standard feature for future cross-platform and exclusive releases alike.
