- Xbox negotiated a significantly lower price tag for Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game, Physint, after Sony walked away from the project.
- The acquisition reportedly includes movie and TV licensing rights for Physint, alongside improved publishing terms for Kojima’s horror title, OD.
- This high-profile deal comes amid aggressive streamlining, studio reshuffling, and cost-cutting measures across Xbox Game Studios.
Hideo Kojima’s highly anticipated action-espionage project, Physint, has officially found a home at Xbox—but at a much lower cost than previously rumored. Despite initial reports circulating a massive $400 million budget, industry insiders now reveal that Microsoft negotiated a deal to pay only a “fraction” of that staggering sum to fund and publish the spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid.
The project was originally slated as a flagship PlayStation exclusive. However, Sony reportedly pulled its funding in June after months of tense negotiations, citing concerns over Physint blowing past its initial deadlines and budget constraints. Seizing the opportunity, Kojima was able to convince Xbox to step in, securing not only the publishing rights for the game but also the highly lucrative multimedia licensing rights for potential film and television adaptations.
Inside the Renegotiated Deal
Initial rumors of a $400 million price tag, sparked by comments from games industry insider Christopher Dring, were quickly walked back. Prominent journalists, including Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier and Windows Central’s Jez Corden, confirmed that Microsoft’s final negotiated figure is “significantly less” than what Kojima originally quoted to Sony. Beyond securing Physint, Xbox’s revised partnership terms also grant Kojima Productions more favorable conditions for OD, the studio’s other highly anticipated interactive horror project.
Xbox’s Shifting Corporate Strategy
This shrewd negotiation reflects a broader financial tightening at Microsoft’s gaming division. Under Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the brand is undergoing aggressive “streamlining” marked by recent layoffs, studio closures, and massive organizational restructuring. While Microsoft continues to chase high-profile blockbusters, this discounted deal demonstrates a calculated, cost-conscious approach to securing premium ecosystem exclusives in a turbulent market.
