Micromax Unite 2 Review – A 7,000 Rupees Beast

Micromax unite 2 review
This phone is a beast in the 7,000 Rupees category. Period. It is the best phone you could buy right now under 7,000 Rupees. Period. It can play high end games at high setting. Period. OK, now that’s a lot of periods. But, seriously this phone took me by surprise. That’s why i am typing like this. When i like a phone, it doesn’t matter what brand it is from or how much it is available at. I will praise it. It is one of the few phones that has the mixture of right specs in the right form factor at the right price. That’s why it is so good.

Hardware & Design

First thing i noticed and you’ll notice too when you’ll hold this device is how thin it is. All the phones with similar specs in this price range are way thicker than this phone. It has rubberized removable back. The back feels a little loose though, it comes off pretty easily. The bezels could have been a bit narrower. It is pretty light weight. It has a very small LED notification light which glows in green colour. Design is nothing special. It’s just a rectangular touch screen phone. Nothing fancy here. But it’s not outside that matters, it’s what’s inside.

Display

It has a 4.7 inches IPS LCD display of WVGA resolution. You can see the pixel with naked eye in it. Display produces a decent image quality. Despite of being IPS it loses some colours while at certain angles. Nothing major though. It’s quality really shines when you take it outside in bright daylight. It’s sunlight readability is very good. Even at medium brightness you can see the screen clearly.

Camera quality

Now camera of this device is pretty decent but it has its flaws. ‘Hey, you can’t have everything rule’ applies here. Let me tell you about its flaw first. If you have used Micromax MAd phone you might have already know about this problem. When you take a photo with flash on, it completely wash out the colours of the image. As you can see in the photos below.

These photos don’t even look that bad, you’ll notice the problem more, when you try to take a photo of your face with flash on. It will make you look like a ghost. Completely white. Apart from that, the image quality, touch to focus, auto focus everything works perfectly fine and the camera produces sharp images.

Did you know that this phone can record videos up-to full HD resolution. Yes, that’s 1080p i am talking about here. How many phones under Rs. 7,000 can do that? Hell! how many of them could even shoot just HD/720p video? And you can also take photos and videos together on this phone. Below are some still samples. And a full HD sample video is in the review video below.

Storage & OS

This phone runs on Android version 4.4.2(KitKat). Thanks to its optimizations for budget phones like this. The phone performed very well. The UI is mostly stock Android. Micromax has not done any customization on top of it apart from making different icons for some its Apps.

Memory/Storage management in this phone is very good. It has got ‘default write disk’ and ‘move to sd’ both features. You’ll never run out of storage in this phone. And won’t have much problem in installing big games on this phone. For the record, it comes with free 1.6GB internal memory out of 4GB and 1GB RAM out of which around 400MB is always free for the user. Check out my ‘Benchmark & Gaming Performance‘ post for full device details.

Music and Video Quality

Well, the speaker of this phone is not that loud. It’s below average. But the quality of audio in ears is loud and clear. Just keep the EQ off while listening to music on this phone and you’ll enjoy the music. Video quality is good too, it can full HD videos without any problem. Because of an IPS display the videos look great. Just if the external speaker of this phone was a little more loud, it could have been great. But then again, you can’t actually complain for what you are getting for the price.

Connectivity

This phone supports dual sim, with two different sim size slots. This is the first time i have seen something like this in a phone. In slot 1, you can put a normal full size sim and in the second slot, you can only put a micro sim. You can use 3G on only one of them at a time. Mostly on sim 1. Call quality is decent although just its loud speaker, its ear piece could have been a bit louder too. It’s very small in size, both physically and in sound reproduction both. Apart from that it has WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, Cast screen options, USB OTG. WiFi connectivity is pretty good.

Performance

All thanks to software optimizations(Kitkat) and a more than decent chipset and not that high resolution screen. This phone’s performance turned out to be really good. It can play games like GTA San Andreas without any problems. It hardly ever lags. Although sometimes during web browsing it stutters a little. On the name of specs let me recite its raw CPU & GPU info once again. Micromax Unite 2 runs on Mediatek MTK 6582 SOC which has Quadcore Cortex A7 processor clocked at 1.3GHz and Mali 400MP2 GPU. A sincere thanks to Micromax for not putting that pathetic Adreno 305/302 GPU in this phone.

Battery life

With great power comes great responsibility amd with great performance comes low battery life. If you are going to continuously play games on this phone. Then expect a battery performance up-to 5-6 hours. The battery depletes a lot faster when you play more and more graphic intensive games. Otherwise on normal use, you can expect battery life up-to 8 hours.

Verdict & Choice

This whole review is my verdict of this phone. If you still can’t figure out if that is a yes or no. Then i can’t help you. Anyway, coming to choice. What else choices do you have in this price range? Not much. Moto E, Lava Iris 406Q, Karbonn Titanium S1 plus, newly launched Lava Iris X1. I would say screw ’em all and just buy this. You won’t regret it. Just keep the battery life in check though. Still, your money, your choice. I can only give you advice. This phone is going to sell bucket loads any way, whether you buy it or not. Don’t break it after buying though or else Micromax servicee centers will make you regret your decision. Literally. So, handle it with care.
