Comparison of upcoming mid-range chipsets

Snapdragon vs MediatekIt’s about time we get some new mid-range chipsets. Especially from Snapdragon. I can’t tell about you but i am really tired of hearing Snapdragon 400’s name again and again. Moving on, the four mid-range chipsets you are going to hear a lot about in the near future are Snapdragon 410, Snapdragon 610 and two from Mediatek, MT6732 and MT6595.

Out of all the four chipsets, Mediatek 6532, Snapdragon 410 and Snapdragon 610 possess 64 bit Cortex A53 processors. You can see more chipsets details in table below.

comparison table

Remember, all of the chipsets above are supposed to be in mid to mid-high range handsets. Raw specs of chipsets looks good for mid-range, if you ask me. One of them – Snapdragon 410 could even come to low range(10,000 – 15,000 Rupees/Approx $160 – $250) handsets if manufacturers try. It has nothing special except for 64-bit processor even its GPU is nothing but an incremental update in number, it’s not from the next-gen series of GPU from Snapdragon. Snapdragon’s next generation GPU series starts with number 4, like 405 that Snapdragon 610 have.

You are going to see a lot of handsets with all of the chipsets in the upcoming time. If i have to take a guess about the price i would say phones with Snapdragon 410 and Mediatek MT6732 would come around 15,000 – 20,000 Rupees/ Approx $250 – $350) initially. Phones with Snapdragon 610 and Mediatek 6595 could come around anything between 20,000 – 25,000 Rupees(in Approx $400 price range).

Phones with Snapdragon 610 could beat my estimated price though because handsets with Snapdragon chipsets usually are more expensive than phones with Mediatek chipsets. Especially if the phone is made by an international brand like Samsung or Sony. On the other hand phones with Mediatek MT6595 chipset could even be cheaper than i estimated because mostly Chinese and Indian smartphone makers like Micromax and Karbonn are going to launch the handsets first with that chipset. And as you know these Chinese/Indian hybrid handsets are marginally cheaper and offers more value for your money. Especially in the performance department.

Cortex A53 vs Cortex A17

I know its quite confusing but Cortex A53, despite of having higher number and 64-bit architecture is actually made for mid range handsets. Its high-range version is Cortex A57. Cortex A17 on the other hand is the theoretical successor of Cortex A9. It is a high end processor and out of all four Mediatek MT6595 is the only chipset that uses Cortex A17 in combination with Cortex A7(ARM’s big-little architecture).
